Basement Design Ideas to Enhance Your Small Space

It is always fun to remodel and spruce up your home. From painting, adding in new furniture, or even creating a brand new basement renovation, it can be exceptionally fulfilling to see your home come alive with new projects.

According to surveys conducted by the National Association of Home Builders, finished basements have become one of the most popular home remodeling projects over the past 20 years. There’s nothing better than coming home to a beautiful, refinished basement, but some homeowners don’t believe they can add one to their home because of space.

You don’t need to have a large space to make the basement of your dreams. Here are some great basement designs for small spaces.

Use neutrals

Colors like white, tan, and grey open up your room and make any space seem more expansive. Dark, bolder colors have the opposite effect, they can make a room feel cramped, the ceilings feel lower, and the walls as if they are suffocating. So when in doubt, go as neutral as possible in a small basement.

Do not add walls

While it may be tempting to add some walls to divide the space, try to make your basement as open as possible. Open concept is great for its versatility and will make the entire basement feel more welcoming.

Make your windows as big as you can

Like neutral colors, light fills up your space and makes any basement look bigger and better. However, basement windows tend to be the smallest in the house and can look dim and uninviting. You can bypass this by getting creative with your windows; for example, if you have a short basement retaining wall, go long horizontally with your windows rather than vertically.

Invest in built-in storage solutions

Kill two birds with one stone and install your cabinet and shelves to go from floor to ceiling all around your basement. This is relatively easy to do during home remodeling; some ideas include ottomans with hidden compartments, side tables with drawers, and bookcases built into the wall.

Just because you have a small space doesn’t mean you have to skimp on the basement remodel of your dreams. Use these tips and you’ll soon have a basement the entire neighborhood will be jealous of!
